Susana Valdez is an assistant professor of translation studies at Leiden University (Netherlands) and is currently completing a 1-year fellowship at the University of Warwick (UK). Following her PhD in medical translation aimed at experts, her research has centred on how migrants access, read and understand health information, with or without translation technologies. Informed by her experience in the translation industry, her research includes audiovisual indirect translation, particularly the ethical and sustainability challenges it presents. She has co-authored several peer-reviewed publications. She serves as a reviews editor for the Journal of Audiovisual Translation and and sits on its editorial board.
With over 13 years of experience in training translators at university level, she began teaching as a guest assistant at NOVA University in Portugal, where she taught technical and specialised translation. Prior to her academic career, she spent 15 years in the translation industry. In addition to working as a specialised translator, she was a language lead and editor for major tech companies.
