Tomáš Svoboda is associate professor and director of the Institute of Translation Studies at Charles University in Prague, Czechia. After graduating from the institute in English and German translation , he earned his PhD there. From 2004 to 2007 he worked as an in-house translator and training coordinator for the Czech language department at DG Translation, and subsequently spent 4 years as a contractor for the European Central Bank in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Since 2008, he has worked at the Institute of Translation Studies in various roles.
He is a member of the Executive Board of the Czech Union of Translators and Interpreters, and has been involved in over 20 national and international projects in the area of translation, in both participant and lead roles. His research interests include tools and technologies in translation, institutional translation studies, the future of the translation profession, translator training, translation quality and translation studies theory. He has published over 60 papers or book chapters, and has been the main editor of books on institutional translation.
