European Master's in Translation

What is the European Master’s in Translation (EMT)?

The European Master’s in Translation (EMT) is a quality label for university translation programmes at master’s level. It was created by the European Commission's DG Translation for programmes that meet agreed professional standards and reflect current market needs.

The EMT network includes 81 programmes offered by 79 universities across 24 countries in Europe and beyond.

Universities awarded the EMT quality label can use the EMT logo, which is a registered EU trademark.

EMT member universities are part of a network committed to high-quality translator training.

The main goal is to improve the quality of translator training in Europe and beyond, in all eligible countries. Highly skilled graduates have better job prospects in the competitive language services market, and are better able to adapt as the profession evolves.

The EMT competence framework

Developed by academics and industry experts, the EMT competence framework defines what students will learn and what universities must teach – covering language proficiency and openness to other cultures, translation ability, technology skills, personal and interpersonal skills and service provision.
