Language Industry Expert Group (LIND)

The Language Industry Expert Group (LIND) brings together leading professionals and organisations from across Europe's language industry to advise the European Commission's DG Translation.

LIND is an expert group of the European Commission: a consultative body through which external specialists provide advice and expertise to support the Commission’s work.

What LIND does

The Commission set up LIND in 2014 to provide specialist advice and industry perspectives. This helps DG Translation improve translation services, language technology and related practices.

LIND meets 3 to 4 times a year in Brussels and includes 12 members representing different areas of the language industry.

The language industry includes translation and interpreting, subtitling and dubbing, localisation (adapting content for local markets), language technology development, international conference organisation, language teaching and linguistic consultancy.

Main tasks

LIND's key responsibilities include

  • advising DG Translation on trends in the language industry, language data and language technologies
  • advising on training needs for translators
  • promoting standards and good practices from the language industry
  • connecting DG Translation with key industry players
  • collecting and analysing language industry data through surveys and updates to classification systems such as
    • NACE (the EU’s nomenclature of economic activities)
    • ISCO (International Standard Classification of Occupations)
    • ESCO (European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations)
  • advising on management and use of language data
  • promoting translation careers (including traineeships) through the Knowledge Centre on Translation and Interpretation.
