What language officers do
DG Translation's language officers are translators based in the European Commission's local offices in EU countries (except Belgium and Luxembourg). They combine linguistic work with communication, outreach and networking. They:
- translate and adapt Commission messages and press releases to fit the local context
- draft and revise texts aimed at the general public, including newsletters, articles, and web and social media content
- provide linguistic advice to the Commission's local office to assist in clear and effective communication with EU citizens
- organise and contribute to events, workshops and campaigns on multilingualism, language learning and the language professions
- build and maintain strong networks with universities, translation associations, local authorities, schools and the language industry
- raise awareness of DG Translation's language-related initiatives, including Juvenes Translatores, the European Master's in Translation (EMT), the European Day of Languages and the Translating Europe Forum
- promote DG Translation's AI translation and language tools and contribute to terminology networks.
Tools language officers use
- computer-assisted translation tools connected to Euramis (European Advanced Multilingual Information System) – the EU institutions' translation memory database, enabling translators to retrieve previously translated segments for reuse
- eTranslation, the European Commission's machine translation service – available to generate raw translations that translators then review, refine and validate
- digital communication and social media platforms – to engage with local audiences and promote events and activities
- graphic design and content creation tools
