Developments in machine translation and AI at the European Commission and the impact on translators’ work

This workshop will provide insights on technical aspects as we will listen to computational linguist Mr Christopher Scott describe and explain the internal development and deployment of linguistic AI and Machine Translation tools within the European Commission Directorate-General for Translation, focusing on the technical development over time. Neural machine translation, GPT technology and large language models will be explained as technologies, and their use will be exemplified using the context of translation within the European Commission and the text-types relevant to this institution.

To give a translator's perspective on how this development has affected the work as an EU translator, we will then listen to senior Commission translator and former quality manager Mr Ingemar Strandvik, who will explain how this technological development within Machine Translation and AI has impacted on the work of translators at the European Commission and on the overall quality work of the language departments.

This in-person event, which is free upon registration, takes place in connection with the SFÖ-SAT conference in Kalmar, Sweden, and will actually be the first in-person Translating Europe Workshop in Sweden since 2018, taking place at an occasion when large parts of the Swedish language industry and key players within academia and translation training will be gathered in one venue.

Mr Scott's presentation will be in English, while the contribution from Mr Strandvik will be in Swedish.
