Languages on screen: cinema speaks Europe

What happens when Europe’s languages meet on the big screen? On 23 and 24 September, Languages on Screen invites audiences in Nicosia to celebrate the European Day of Languages through the universal language of cinema. Following an official opening at the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, the programme continues on 23 and 24 September with two open-air evenings where a curated European film programme in a variety of EU languages will bring together languages, cultures and stories in a relaxed, end-of-summer setting.

Open to the general public, the event will particularly appeal to young people and anyone curious about cinema, languages, translation and European culture. 

In between screenings, short conversations will offer glimpses behind the screen, exploring translation for cinema, subtitling and the rapidly evolving role of AI-based language technologies in making audiovisual content accessible across languages and borders. Bringing together EU, cultural and local partners, Languages on Screen aims to make multilingualism tangible, engaging and relevant to everyday life.
