The two previous and very popular TEWs at Aarhus University focused on ‘Myths and Truths about MT’ (2023) and on ‘Impact of the Digital Transformation on the Translation Industry’ (2024). Now, in this 2025 workshop, we will start by taking stock of the development and ask participants to suggest updated input for the competency profile of a translator today and in the near future. Which skills will be needed – based on their experience and imagination?
Next, we will hear speeches by two of the university’s AI researchers and by a Commission expert on the hypothetical concept of ‘AI superintelligence’, a form of AI that surpasses human cognitive skills. What can we expect in realistic terms? Which sectors would be affected, and what kinds of challenges and dilemmas does this form of AI entail? How are these areas regulated by the AI Act?
We will ask the participants to define what a (superintelligent) human translator is able to do, to have a benchmark against which the AI should be measured. Finally, we will ask the participants, based on the speeches and discussions of the day, how to teach society about the superpower of translators in an AI era.
