International cooperation in language services: DG Translation at IAMLADP 2026

DG Translation and DG Interpretation represented the European Commission at the 2026 International Annual Meeting on Language Arrangements, Documentation and Publications (IAMLADP), held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, from 29 June to 1 July. The meeting, organised under the auspices of the United Nations, was co-hosted by the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union and the Council of Europe. 

A technology-powered, human-centric future

The meeting covered topics related to the future of language services, including multilingualism, artificial intelligence, language technologies, recruitment and skills development. One session focused on this year's host paper, jointly drawn up by the 5 co-hosting institutions, which explored the human dimension of multilingualism alongside the opportunities and challenges facing language services. 

DG Translation also presented its work on developing a large language model covering all 24 EU official languages and on integrating AI-powered tools into translation workflows.

Led by the United Nations, IAMLADP brings together more than 80 international organisations working in conference, language and publishing services. It provides a platform to exchange experience, develop common approaches and improve the quality, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of multilingual services.

Through IAMLADP, DG Translation exchanges expertise, shares best practices and discusses developments in language technologies and the management of multilingual services. It contributes to several IAMLADP working groups and task forces. Following the 2026 meeting, one representative of DG Translation will serve as Vice-Chair of the new Task Force on Language Technologies, which succeeds the Joint Inter-Agency Meeting on Computer-Assisted Translation and Terminology (JIAMCATT), and another as Co-Chair of the Universities Contact Group Task Force. 

DG Translation's wider international cooperation

Beyond IAMLADP, DG Translation works with other international partners in the field of language services. It participates in several working groups of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), contributing to the development of standards for language services and terminology. It also maintains contacts with public- and private-sector organisations in non-EU countries, including the United Kingdom, to share expertise and good practices.

Through these cooperation frameworks and networks, DG Translation helps promote high-quality multilingual services and supports the exchange of knowledge and innovation across international organisations.
