Every year, the European Commission invites 17-year-old secondary school students from across the EU to take on a real translation challenge. The Juvenes Translatores contest – running since 2007 – promotes language learning and gives young people a taste of what it means to be a translator.
This year's theme was From languages to landscapes: European journeys to mutual understanding. It inspired a record turnout: 3 004 students from 716 schools took part, translating in 155 different language combinations out of the 552 available.
On contest day in late November, students translated a 1-page text between any 2 EU official languages, under exam conditions, supervised by their teachers. Professional translators from the Commission then assessed all entries.
This year's 27 winners, one from each EU country, travelled to Brussels with their parents and teachers for a 3-day visit. On 27 March, they attended the award ceremony at the European Commission. They also had the chance to meet Commission translators and learn about their work. A visit to the Experience Europe interactive exhibition was another highlight.
The Directorate-General for Translation warmly congratulates all 27 winners on this outstanding achievement.
