Translating Europe Forum 2025: Quality matters – now more than ever

TEF 2025 closing remarks

What happens when 2000 people – industry leaders and academics, students and seasoned language professionals meet to discuss the need for clear language, quality in translation, the latest in ISO standards and the role of AI

The 2025 Translating Europe Forum took place from 5 to 7 November – 3 days of thought-provoking content.

As one participant put it: ‘I loved the powerful insights and feeling part of such a great community of language professionals.’

Some highlights:

Main take-aways:

  • Clear language and translation are two sides of the same coin. Language is how we understand the world. Clear language and quality translation create trust in the content we produce and therefore in the organisation we work for. They also boost the impact of the message an organisation wants to pass on.
  • Good enough quality depends on the question ‘Good enough for what?’
  • AI is like religion: some are believers, other are not, or are on the fence.
  • AI is made of language – and language experts need to play a role in creating it, not just using it.
  • The European Commission’s AI-based multilingual tools use high-quality data coming from all EU institutions. As we serve the public interest, our bias is serving EU citizens.
  • The quality of our words matters, and matters deeply in a democracy.
  • Words matter, quality matters, language professionals matter.
